Handyman Special
Renovating that old house on Market Street

July 15

The washing machine! Who can deny the joy in knowing that your dirty laundry will never be a public matter. (Unless of course you become a victim of the Patriot Act.)

Getting the laundry hooked up was a big step. It was also the end (at least for the near future) of discussion and debate about where to put it, and what hardware to use. As it turns out, we've kept our existing washer and dryer. The dryer will be installed either in the basement (if we can get it down there), or the barn. 19th century farm houses don't accommodate Kenmore Super Deluxe laundry units well. The original occupants of this house didn't even have indoor plumbing.

Here, the first stage of the installation.

The picture to the left shows the drain connected to the main stack. The picture to the right is looking up to the ceiling at the drain for a bidet to be installed off the master bedroom.

Plumbing is the most difficult job of the renovation. There is little room for error, and the consequences for not getting it right are expensive.

I understand fully now why plumbers demand big money. The work is hard. It requires a lot of planning, skill, and difficult working conditions.

Here in the basement, the confluence of plumbing changes, the new electrical service, and the data lines. (Note the data lines need to run at a right angle to the power.)

Time out for stump removal.

In the process of removing two old stumps (I thought I was going to pass out from the exertion), I discovered the old granite post that marks the corner of the property.

...and a little reading before bedtime.
