Handyman Special
Renovating that old house on Market Street

December 17

Things have slowed a bit as I've been down with a vigorous cold, but the kitchen demolition has started and there's always planning and research to be done.

The pantry walls are coming down and the "Early American Crappy" cabinets are coming off too. I was actually hoping to save the cabinets for use in the barn later but they are built in and not very cleanly. It seems like it was a 'make it up as you go along' job with three times as many nails as were needed. It hasn't been pleasant removing them, both for the hard work and the fact of something useful being destroyed. It feels a bit like what I imagine shooting a lame horse feels like.
On the lighter side is my other occupation. On the left, Ramon and I are packing up the sandbox toys for the winter. Three machines were allowed inside for winter use. On the right, the clam digger crane is put to work on a popcorn project.

A summer project that should help keep us happy through the many days of indoor play. Ramon's Barn is shown at right. I built this out of scraps pulled from a dumpster that was used in someone else's renovation project around the corner. Timbers were hand milled from "Ossipee Mountain Firewood" that's sold at country stores around here to weekenders. Isn't it sweet?

Finally, another old newspaper discovered in Chez Melendy proclaims death and destruction in Brooklyn. This famous subway wreck happened almost 100 years ago just a few yards from our old apartment at 1035 Washington Avenue. Cybele found this link to more info. on the Malbone Street Wreck.
